Cape Cod House Plans
Cape Cod style homes originated along the Eastern Seaboard in the early 1700’s as a larger version of the simple heavy timber-framed houses built by the first colonists. Cape Cod designs, along with Saltbox style homes, were most prevalent in the coastal areas of Massachusetts, Connecticut and Rhode Island where their steep, side-gabled roof lines performed well in the severe New England winters. Later, gabled dormers were added to create more light in single story versions and additional space in 1 1/2 story variants. Modern versions add flair by adding l-shapes and covered porches to the original rectangular form.
