Coastal Design Element #3: Bermuda & Bahama Shutters

“Bermuda, Bahama, come on pretty mama…”

For many, this famous Beach Boys’ tune creates illusions of tropical seascapes, bronzed beauties, and cute little fruity drinks with mini umbrellas. For us, some of the best coastal home design elements come to mind. Named after the tropical hotspots of their origin, Bermuda and Bahama are also types of very coastal-centric home shutters. Originally designed for the islands to aid in house ventilation and hurricane protection, Bermuda shutters have now become a key design element in coastal building across the world. Although aesthetics brought these shutter designs out of the islands and into a broader spectrum of home design, these shades have more than just curb appeal.

Beauty aside, one word can describe Bermuda shutters – protection. They guard your home against weather, heat, and intrusion. Designed to withstand the hurricane beatings of the tropics, rest assured, bermuda shutters are one of your homes greatest assets in battles against sea storms heading in your direction. Also called “hurricane shutters,” these window treatments were made to prevent wind from breaking windows and tearing homes apart from the inside out. Even the devastation of recent US hurricanes like Katrina shed light on the benefits of storm shutters. Swinging out from the top instead of from either side, these shutters are easier to close than your average shutter which is helpful when preparing for a storm.

When opened, bahama shutters also allow a soft summer breeze to flow through your home. The unique design allows you to control how much or how little air flows into your house. All you have to do is adjust the angle of the propped shutter to let more or less air in. Even better, the amount of sunlight entering through your windows can be regulated.

Even home safety is heightened with these exterior home additions. In today’s world it’s always a good idea to take extra precautions against intruders. By keeping the shutters closed, potential tresspassers are kept afar – these shutters are quite a feat to get through from the outside.

Whether you want to wait out the storm, feel the breeze, sleep soundly, or add a coastal appeal, bermuda shutters are a great addition to any coastal home. There are a variety of wood and aluminum products to choose from. Check them out at: Headhouse Square Shutters or Sunbelt Shutters.

“….Key Largo, Montego, baby why don’t we go….” Can’t seem to get ‘Kokomo’ out of your head?
